AI development for IoT and smart devices

Building a product that reliably collects sensor data, surfaces useful insights, handles edge cases at scale, and actually gets adopted is where most IoT projects fall apart. We've been building IoT products since 2014, hold two patents in connected device technology, and have shipped solutions ranging from consumer devices sold at Target to industrial platforms managing thousands of machines across global deployments.

WHY CHOOSE NINETWOTHREE

IoT software development for teams who need it to work at scale

Full-stack IoT development, not just the app

We connect hardware to software end to end. Bluetooth Low Energy, Wi-Fi, cellular, edge computing, MQTT, OPC UA: our team knows the protocols that matter for your device category.

Predictive intelligence on sensor data

Raw sensor data has limited value on its own. We layer machine learning models on top of IoT streams to build predictive maintenance systems, anomaly detection pipelines, and usage-pattern models that turn data into decisions.

Consumer IoT app development that gets adopted

Device onboarding is where consumer IoT products lose users. We design and build pairing flows, error states, and first-run experiences that reduce setup drop-off and generate the reviews that drive retail distribution.

Industrial IoT solutions without the integration headache

We've integrated with PLCs (Siemens, Allen-Bradley), SCADA systems, and industrial sensors using OPC UA. We also build the API bridges that connect OT data to ERP and cloud systems without requiring a full OT/IT network overhaul.

Edge-first where latency matters

For applications where cloud round-trips are too slow (medical monitoring, quality control, safety systems), we build edge inference pipelines that process data locally and sync to the cloud asynchronously.

SOC 2 compliant and secure by default

IoT devices expand the attack surface of any product. We build in device authentication, encrypted data transmission, role-based access controls, and OTA update pipelines that don't create security regressions.

WHAT WE CAN BUILD FOR YOU

Smart device development systems we build on request

Not every project we take on starts as a published case study. These are the use cases IoT founders and engineering teams ask for most, each one a production build scoped to your hardware and deployment environment.

Predictive Maintenance Platforms

Predictive maintenance systems built on your sensor data

  • Anomaly detection — Trained on your historical sensor streams
  • Alert pipelines  — Thresholds and escalation logic built in
  • Dashboard — Real-time visibility for operations teams
Consumer IoT App Development

Pairing flows and first-run experiences that drive retention

  • BLE and Wi-Fi pairing — Drop-off reduced from first session
  • Error state design  — Clear recovery paths for every failure mode
  • OTA updates — Safe, staged rollouts with rollback capability
Industrial IoT Integration

OT data connected to ERP and cloud systems

  • PLC integration — Siemens, Allen-Bradley, via OPC UA and Modbus
  • ERP bridge — OT data surfaced in the systems your team already uses
  • No full OT/IT overhaul — Scoped to connect existing infrastructure
FAQs

About IoT software development with NineTwoThree

What IoT connectivity protocols do you work with?

We have production experience with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), Wi-Fi, cellular (LTE-M, NB-IoT), MQTT, CoAP, OPC UA, Modbus, and Zigbee. The right protocol depends on power budget, latency requirements, and deployment environment. We scope this in discovery. For a broader overview, see our guide to understanding IoT.

Can you work with hardware that's already been designed?

Yes. Most of our IoT engagements start with hardware that exists. We build the firmware hooks, mobile companion apps, cloud backend, and analytics layer around it. If hardware design is also needed, we have partners we work with for that phase.

How do you handle OTA (over-the-air) firmware updates?

We build OTA update pipelines that include staged rollouts, rollback capability, and cryptographic signature verification. Pushing broken firmware to deployed devices is one of the most damaging IoT development failure modes, and we build around it from the start.

What does it take to get a consumer IoT device into retail?

Retail requires a polished onboarding experience, App Store compliance, carrier-grade reliability, and often FCC/CE certification. We've shipped devices to Target and know what the review process looks like. We build the app experience that survives the spike in support load that comes immediately after launch.

What's the typical investment range for IoT software development?

Consumer IoT app and cloud backend typically runs $100K to $200K. Custom IoT software development for industrial platforms with ERP integrations and ML pipelines ranges $200K to $500K and above. We scope precisely in discovery so you have a fixed budget before development starts.
